The World of Fashion 101: Everything You Need to Know

What do Paris, New York, Milan and London have in common? They are all considered the Fashion Capitals of the world and while Canada might not be considered a global fashion center yet, we are not short of talents who have made a name in the fashion industry.  From Dean and Dan, the creative minds behind Dsqauerd, to Jason Wu who has dressed the likes of Michelle Obama, to Brian Bailey who acted as a mentor on the Canadian version of Project Runway, Canadians are slowly but surely making a name for themselves in this ever-growing global industry.

At BrightMinds, we are excited to be one of the only online high schools in Ontario to offer the Grade 12 fashion course: The World of Fashion. This online course provides students with the basic knowledge and skills needed to continue learning about the fashion industry and its related careers in post-secondary education.

A Brief Overview of the Course

Developed from the Ontario Social Science curriculum, the World of Fashion course offers students ample opportunity to learn and explore the many facets of the fashion industry, from social and economic factors that affect production to the history and influences that have shaped the way we see fashion today. In this course, students will also have the chance to learn hands-on design and sewing technics. Lastly, students will learn about the business side of fashion from brand marketing to merchandising.

History and Influences

To have a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the fashion industry, students start this course from the very beginning. You might be surprised by how seemingly unrelated events, such as early European trade routes and the world wars, had such an impact on fashion design and production. Every era tells a story through its fashion, giving students an excellent background of the industry.

Textile Production, Society, and the Globalized Marketplace

Fashion students get down to business with this section of the course. By the end of this section, students are expected to identify specialized fashion markets and have an understanding of technical innovations and modifications for these specialized markets. For instance, students will learn what makes a garment flame retardant, stretchy, waterproof, and adjustable. Students will also learn all about the backbone of the fashion industry: global textile production, without which there would be no industry to speak of. Lastly, students will learn about the social and environmental impact the textile production has on our planet and its people, and the legislation that aims to protect them.

Design and Fashion Construction Skills

BrightMinds students who may be worried that they will not be able to learn the tactile skills it takes to be a fashion designer will be particularly excited about this section of the course. The World of Fashion course is intended to help you build the skills you need to be your own fashion designer! Students will learn how garments are constructed and the appropriate use of certain textiles in production. They are also expected to use fashion-related tools and techniques for creating fashion products. Expect to improve your sewing, cutting, pinning, and knitting skills ?.
