Course Overview

This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over time. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Students will explore ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change.

Course Outline

A. Research and Inquiry Skills

Students will:

Develop research questions related to social change.
Gather information from a variety of sources.
Analyze and evaluate evidence.
Communicate findings using appropriate formats and APA citation style.

B. Social Change

Students will:

Examine major social science theories related to social change.
Analyze causes and effects of social change.
Investigate the impact of technological advancements on society.
Explore the roles of leadership, activism, and social movements.

C. Social Patterns and Trends

Students will:

Study demographic changes in Canada and globally.
Analyze factors that shape social trends and patterns.
Examine theories of deviance and society’s responses to social issues.

D. Global Social Challenges

Students will:

Investigate human rights and global inequalities.
Assess the impact of globalization on individuals and communities.
Analyze issues related to exploitation, poverty, and environmental sustainability.

By the end of this course, students will:

Apply research and inquiry skills to investigate issues related to social change.

Analyze social patterns, trends, demographics, and issues related to deviance in society.
